The Department of Sanitation continues their commercial waste zone rollout, this time in Bronx East and West. Read on to get more details about this part of the rollout, and due dates for businesses in these neighborhoods.
Commercial Waste Zone Reminders
Per the DSNY, Commercial Waste Zone requirements apply to anyone who “currently has their waste collected by a private carter.” Reminder – the city collects trash, recycling, and compostable materials from residents/residential properties, though they’re rolling out programs to streamline collection there too. Unlike residences, businesses are required to hire private carters. Based on the new laws and rules, businesses must sign a new contract with a zone-authorized carter once their area sign-up period begins.
So far, Queens Central is the only NYC area that has seen a full rollout, earlier in 2025. The city’s goal is to complete implementation by December 31, 2027.
Bronx East & West Requirements
If you have a business in Bronx East or West, here’s what you’ll have to do:
- October 1, 2025 – Sign-up period begins for all businesses
- November 30, 2025 – Deadline for all businesses to enter into a contract with a zone-authorized private carter
- If businesses fail to do so by this date, they will be assigned a carter at the maximum allowable rate
Check here to find your zone, and authorized carters for that area. You can also view more resources for private carters, including template agreements and maximum price calculators, at DSNY’s site.
If you have questions, the DSNY is hosting several virtual info sessions through the end of 2025 (in English and Spanish). Visit their website to register.
