DOHMH’s Latest Cooling Tower Reminders

As Summer continues, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is reminding teams to implement new and updated cooling tower requirements.

More Frequent Sampling Required

The DOHMH reminded teams that as of May 8th, 2026, owners with cooling towers must collect Legionella samples at least every month while the device is in operation, with no more than 31 days between samples. Qualified persons can report the date of the sample in the NYC Cooling Tower Registration Portal within 5 days of collection. Owners can add Qualified Persons to their portal at the same link, under System Page > Manage Qualified Person.

Owners must also notify DOHMH of the tower’s most recent startup date, shutdown date, and operation period.

Don’t Forget Summertime Hyperhalogenation

Summertime hyperhalogenation requires cooling towers to receive an additional application of high-level biocide once a year, between July 1st and August 31st. Owners must then submit this form within 30 days after completing the disinfection.

Teams must collect a Legionella sample within the period of 3 to 31 days after the hyperhalogenation.
