September 1st is only one week away! That means Summer is officially (and unfortunately) winding down, and annual HPD registration is due.
As a reminder, property owners of residential buildings are required to register with HPD annually by law. This includes:
- Multiple Dwelling properties (3+ units)
- Private dwellings (1-2 family homes) where neither the owner nor the owner’s immediate family resides
- Hotels (considered transient multifamily dwellings), condos, and co-ops
While annual registrations are due next week, you must re-register (no fees) if ownership or management changes throughout the year.
Owners can register by logging into HPD’s Property Registration Online System. Please note that forms must be printed, signed, and mailed upon completion. Send completed registrations to:
Department of Housing Preservation and Development
Church Street Station
PO Box 3888
New York, NY 10008-3888
You may have already noticed the $13 registration fee on your July 1st Statement of Account. This year you can pay registration fees directly via the DOF portal/mail-in – click here for more details.
Failing to register may result in civil penalties, Commissioner Orders, or the inability to certify HPD violations. You will also be prevented from filing a court action to recover possession for nonpayment of rent. Any Orders (typically Class 1 violations) issued for failure to register will be removed once registration is complete.
Any questions or inquiries can be directed to the Registration Assistance Unit – (212) 863-7000 or register@hpd.nyc.gov. You can also check out HPD’s Frequently Asked Questions sheet.
With the Fall comes beautiful leaves, pumpkin spice everything, and more HPD information! Mark your calendars for our HPD-centric webinar hosted by Vendome this October 27th – more details to come!
