Following a devastating Bronx fire, the City Council has released a new package of regulations aimed at preventing the spread of fires throughout a building (in addition to minimizing underlying fire causes).

Here’s what you need to know:

(click on the blue bar to get more details about each specific law!)

1 - All apartments must have self-closing doors by 2021

2 - Owners of multiple dwellings must post public notice about closing doors when escaping fires

3 - Smoke alarm and smoke detector placement for future installations

4 - Multiple dwelling owners must provide stove knobs & additional annual notice requirement

5 - The FDNY must conduct outreach and education to residential buildings

6 - The FDNY will also help parents and children with fire safety education

7 - The FDNY must also assist with specialized emergency plan development

Stay tuned for more details about promulgation and enforcement, coming before the end of the year (if not sooner)!
