DOB Complaints and Violations

How do I close a Work Without a Permit Violation?

You can close Work Without a Permit Violations depending on the type that was issued. DOB-ECB violations require compliance and a possible hearing/fine, while PVTs require correction. Generally, you must pull and post the appropriate permits or correct worksite infractions as part of the process. Finally, you must pay any civil penalties due (in addition to possible ECB fines).

As of Fall 2017, Work Without a Permit civil penalties have increased:

  • Civil penalties for WWPs issued to 1-2 family homes are now 6 times the amount of the permit fee: between $600 and $10,000
  • Civil penalties for WWPs issued to all other buildings are now 21 times the amount of the permit fee: between $6,000 and $15,000
  • As a reminder, these are separate from and in addition to any ECB-related penalties that may be assessed at a hearing
